This six-hour, hands-on workshop is designed specifically for Part 9 building trades whose work directly affects home performance—mechanical installers, insulators, plumbers, electricians, and other key subcontractors. Delivered by two technical specialists from Bernhardt Contracting, the training focuses on practical building-science knowledge and installation practices tailored to the East Kootenay climate and construction conditions.
Participants will learn the essentials of building science, including heat flow, air leakage, vapor control, condensation risk, and how day-to-day workmanship impacts durability, comfort, and energy performance. The workshop provides a clear, accessible review of the BC Energy Step Code and Zero Carbon Step Code, covering TEDI, MEUI, airtightness, % Better, and brace-wall and seismic code basics. Emphasis is placed on sequencing and installation practices that help teams achieve performance targets with fewer callbacks and less rework.
The session also explores mechanical systems for cold-climate homes—both all-electric and dual-energy options—and how they influence Step Code outcomes. The final module highlights cost-effective design and construction strategies, helping trades use performance codes to their advantage and apply details that work consistently and reliably. Attendees will leave with practical skills and a better understanding of their critical role in building high-performance, resilient homes.
