Kamloops, BC – The Canadian Home Builders’ Association Central Interior (CHBA CI) proudly marked its 60th anniversary in 2025, celebrating six decades of leadership, advocacy, and innovation in the residential construction industry.
The milestone was capped with a sold-out celebration on May 30 at the TRU Grand Hall in Kamloops, attended by over 350 members, industry partners, and community leaders.
Founded in 1965 by local builders Frank Hewlett and Gene Allgaier, the Kamloops and District House Builders’ Association began with just 12 members—each contributing $100 to establish the organization. On September 14, 1965, the group officially joined the National House Builders’ Association, laying the foundation for what would become one of the most respected voices in residential construction in British Columbia.
“From our humble beginnings to becoming a regional leader in residential construction, this milestone is a testament to the strength and dedication of our members,” said CHBA CI President Chris Crowell. “It’s a chance to honour our past, recognize the work we’re doing today, and look ahead to the future of housing in our region.”
A Legacy of Growth and Industry Impact
Over the past 60 years, CHBA CI has evolved significantly—adapting to industry changes, expanding its geographic reach, and deepening its impact.
A Brief History of CHBA Central Interior:
CHBA CI continues to champion fair housing policy, deliver education and technical support, and foster partnerships that strengthen the industry. Its flagship Training House program remains a cornerstone initiative—now in its 35th year—providing students from TRU’s Trades and Technology programs with hands-on learning. Once completed by students and enhanced by CHBA CI member companies, the home becomes the grand prize in the YMCA Dream Home Lottery. At the May 30 celebration, YMCA BC’s Colin Reid acknowledged the lasting strength of this partnership and its impact on both students and community housing initiatives.
Celebrating 60 Years in Style
The May 30 anniversary celebration was more than a milestone—it was a vibrant tribute to six decades of progress and partnership. Guests enjoyed food and drink stations, interactive games, a mechanical bull, an LED robot show, and a striking visual timeline wall. The evening also featured speeches from key industry leaders, including CHBA National President Matt McCurrach, a proud Kamloops local; Bertine Stelzer from BC Hydro, representing our Diamond Sponsor; and John Drazic from FortisBC, our Platinum Sponsor.
“This was more than a party—it was a celebration of 60 years of shared success, collaboration, and community,” said CHBA CI Executive Officer Rose Choy. “We’ve always believed in working together—with our members, municipalities, and partners—to support responsible growth, innovation, and excellence in housing.”
CHBA Central Interior remains a non-profit organization governed by a volunteer Board of Directors and supported by a professional staff team. With nearly 300 member companies—including builders, developers, subtrades, suppliers, and professionals—the association continues to represent one of the most vital sectors in the region’s economy.
